3.0a ultra low dropout linear regulator tj3966 aug. 2010 - rev. 1.7.1 - 8 - htc application information output adjustment (adjustable version) an adjustable output device has output voltage range of 1.145v to 5.0v. to obtain a desired output voltage, the following equation can be used with (r1+r2) resistor range of 1k ? to 100k ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? = 1 1.145 v r1 r2 out to enhance output stability, a capacitor of 68pf to 100pf can be placed in series with v out and adj. sense pin in applications where the regulator output is not very close to the load, the tj3966 can provide better remote load regulation characteristics using the sense pin. tj3966 regulates the voltage at the output pin. hence, the voltage at the remote load will be lower than the voltage at the output pin as a value of the voltage drop across the trace series resistance. if the sense option pin is not required, the sense pin must be connected to the v out pin. connecting the sense pin to the remote load will provide regulation at the remote load because the tj 3966 regulates the voltage at the sense pin when the sense option pin is used. output capacitor the tj3966 requires a proper output capacitance to maintain stability and improve transient response over current. the esr of the output capacitor within the limits of 0.5 ? to 10 ? is required. a minimum capacitance value of 22f of tantalum or aluminum el ectrolytic capacitor is recommended. in a case of ceramic capacitor, a minimum capacitance value of 10f is required and additional resistance of minimum 1 ? should be added with the output capacitor in series to maintain its minimum esr. the resistance and capacitance have to be varied upon the load current. vout adj gnd r2 r1 22f output + - vout adj gnd r2 r1 10f output additional resistance
3.0a ultra low dropout linear regulator tj3966 aug. 2010 - rev. 1.7.1 - 9 - htc maximum output current capability the tj3966 can deliver a continuous current of 3.0a over the full operating junction temperature range. however, the output current is limited by the restriction of power dissipat ion which differs from packages. a heat sink may be required depending on the maximum power dissipation and maximum ambient temperature of application. with respect to the ap plied package, the maximum output current of 3.0a may be still undeliverable due to the restriction of the power dissipation of tj3966. under all possible conditions, the junction temperature must be within the range specified under operating conditions. the temperatures over the device are given by: t c = t a + p d x ca / t j = t c + p d x jc / t j = t a + p d x ja where t j is the junction temperature, t c is the case temperature, t a is the ambient temperature, p d is the total power dissipation of the device, ca is the thermal resistan ce of case-to-ambient, jc is the thermal resistance of junction-to-case, and ja is the thermal resistance of junction to ambient. the total power dissipation of the device is given by: p d = p in ? p out = (v in x i in )?(v out x i out ) = (v in x (i out +i gnd )) ? (v out x i out ) = (v in - v out ) x i out + v in x i gnd where i gnd is the operating ground current of the device which is specified at the electrical characteristics. the maximum allowable temperature rise (t rmax ) depends on the maximum ambient temperature (t amax ) of the application, and the maximum allowable junction temperature (t jmax ): t rmax = t jmax ? t amax the maximum allowable value for junction-to-ambient thermal resistance, ja , can be calculated using the formula: ja = t rmax / p d = (t jmax ? t amax ) / p d tj3966 is available in sop8-pp, to225, to263 and to220 packages. the thermal resistance depends on amount of copper area or heat sink, and on air flow. if the maximum allowable value of ja calculated above is over 175c/w for sop8-pp package, ov er 105 c/w for to252 package, over 80 c/w for to263 package, over 70 c/w for to220 package, no heat sink is needed since the package can dissipate enough heat to satisfy these requirements. if the value for allowable ja falls near or below these limits, a heat sink or proper area of copper plane is required. in summary, the absolute maximum ratings of thermal resistances are as follow: absolute maximum ratings of thermal resistance no heat sink / no air flow / no adjacent heat source / t a = 25c characteristic symbol rating unit thermal resistance junction-to-ambient / sop8-pp ja-sop8-pp 175 c/w thermal resistance junction-to-ambient / to252 ja-to252 105 c/w thermal resistance junction-to-ambient / to263 ja-to263 80 c/w thermal resistance junction-to-ambient / to220 ja-to220 70 c/w in case that there is no cooling solution and no heat sink / copper plane area for heat sink, the maximum allowable power dissipation of each package is as follow;
